String Creatures

With a pronounced commitment to contemporary repertoire, the Fabrik Quartet presents itself as a laboratory for new sound worlds within the string quartet genre. Their practice is grounded in close collaboration with composers and a strong focus on expanding the instrument’s techniques, timbral range, and performative possibilities.
This program highlights the quartet as a site of physical and sonic experimentation. In String Creatures, Liza Lim explores the string quartet as a kind of “living” sonic organism, in which textures, gestures, and refined playing techniques are in constant
transformation. In Aracne, Héctor Parra draws on the web as both a structural and mythological image, creating a tightly wrought and intricately detailed sonic fabric. Finally, in Tetras, Iannis Xenakis pushes the quartet’s energy to an almost architectural mass of sound, where rhythm and structure collide and coalesce with explosive force. Together, these works trace a trajectory in which the string quartet emerges as an exploded, reinvented medium—physical, intense, and in perpetual motion.
